Have a Special Valentines Day with out the High Prices!
With Valentines Day right around the corner it is time to
start making plans for this special day. There are several things that you can plan and do for your special someone with out the high price tag. Some of the things are:
*Put together a basket of the persons favorite things. (fav candy, snacks, bubble bath, candles, and much more)
*Make a memory box (a napkin from a restaurant where you had your first date, ticket stub from the movies or theme park, ect)
*Reserve a whole day alone for the both of you or just a special evening to bring in the romance!
*Cook their favorite meal or a fancy dinner at home with candles and wine to avoid the long waits and high prices of going out to eat. This way it will be more intimate with the jsut the two of you.
*Leave love notes all over (on the bathroom mirror, in their car, ect)
*Make your own card with a list of everything that you love about that special someone
*Give your special someone a nice back rub or foot rub
*If you want to take them out to eat on Valentines Day then take them to lunch instead(lunch prices are cheaper than dinner prices) or take them to dinner on another night instead of the actual date to avoid higher prices and long waits
*Dont Buy Roses. Roses are always more costly around special occaisons. You can get just as nice arrangement with a different choice of flowers.
*Make a personal gift. You can get a very inexpensive personalized photo mug, or calendar made with all of your favorite photos together.
*Burn a custom CD with all of their favorite songs and also include those special songs that you two share.
*Bake something special. You can bake thier favorite desert all decorated with love
*Bring them breakfast in bed
*Do some of their chores around the house that they hate to do.
*Or Come up with your own special idea. It is not about how much money you spend on that person to show how much you love them. Valentines Day is about love not money!!

Family Fun!!

Edible Popcorn Ball Ornaments

Popcorn Ball

Ingredients:

3/4 cup light corn syrup

1/4 cup margarine

2 tsp cold water

2 5/8 cup confectioners sugar

1 cup marshmellows

5 quarts plain popped popcorn

Combine corn syrup, margarine, cold water, confectioners sugar, and marshmellows in a pot. Heat and stir to boil.

Then combine mixture with popcorn coating each piece of popcorn well.

Grease Hands with vegetable shortening and shape popcorn into balls. Then wrap each ball in plastic wrap and let cool at room temperature!

Ornaments

Ingredients:

small popcorn ball

mini candy canes

colored sugar

frosting

mini m&m's

Use a skewer to poke a hole in the top of the popcorn ball. Then place a candy cane in the hole all the way down until the top of the candy cane appears like a loop.

Now combine colored sugar with frosting to decorate lines around the popcorn ball. Also use the frosting as a glue to place the m&m's on the popcorn ball as well.

Decorate to your own preference and have fun with the whole family!

As most of you know each year the ContraVest FAMILY, Friends, Vendors, Residents, and Contractors all come together to adopt Bernadette Hanlon our BEAUTIFUL FRIEND and CO-WORKER to give her 6 daughters a Christmas they will never forget!
For those of you who have not heard of Bernadette’s story, she is a single mom with 3 girls of her own and a less than 5 years ago her oldest daughter had a regular babysitting job to watch 3 little girls. Her daughter had an unexpected school event on the same night she had committed to babysitting. The girl’s mother’s name was Amy, that night Bernie offered to cover for her daughter by watching Amy’s girls in her home. Amy’s oldest daughter 13 at the time decided to stay home alone while the other girls stayed with Bernie. That night a turn of events drastically changed all of their lives forever. Amy’s ex-husband broke into Amy’s home tied up her daughter and waited with a knife for Amy to return. When Amy walked into their home she was brutally attacked and murdered in front of her 13 year old daughter. Luckily Amy’s boyfriend who was parking the car walked in just in time to save Amy’s daughter, he too was stabbed in the struggle and fortunately survived. Amy’s daughter’s had only one living relative a grandmother who was elderly and unable to care for the girls… Bernie took these distraught little girls into her home because they had no one. Their father was arrested and charged with their mother’s murder. Fast forward nearly 5 years, Bernie has spent countless hours fighting the system to protect these children. She spent numerous hours at trial to see that their father paid for his crime and numerous hours at doctor’s appointments for child counseling, she is proud to tell everyone that she was able to officially ADOPT the girls!
As you can imagine it’s a difficult job being a single mother of 6 girls! Bernie’s 3 girls have sacrificed so much by welcoming their new sister’s into their very small home. Amy’s daughters have suffered an unforgettable loss in the murder of their mom. No matter how difficult things have been Bernie has been the one constant in their life! Bernie is an “ANGEL” in every since of the word!
It is our honor each year to give this beautiful and certainly deserving family a wonderful Christmas one that they will remember and cherish for years to come! Christin, Wendy and Darla will head up the fundraiser this year! We ask that you donate whatever you can--no amount is too small! Thanksgiving History!

The First American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 by the Plymouth Colony to honor thier first successful harvest, The Wampanoag Indians were on a two-day journey to the Plymouth Colony where they were then invited to join the Pilgrims in their feast. That same year the govenor proclamed a day of thanks and was then celebrated as a traditional harvest feast. It wasnt until 1977 that all of the colonies celebrated Thanksgiving on the same day. George Washington set aside December 18, 1977 as a day "for solemn Thanksgiving and Praise" which was the first Thanksgiving in the newly formed United States. In 1846 Sarah Hale began a campaign to make the last Thursday of the month of November the national Thanksgiving holiday. It wasn't until 1941 President Roosevelt signed the legislation making Thanksgiving Day the last Thursday of each November!

Turkey Tips: Deep- Fried Turkey

Deep Frying a whole turkey can be messy and presents some unique hazards. For these reasons it should always be done outdoors on a flat, non-flammable surface--not on the deck, and not in the garage. It is also not recommended to do unless you have the right equiptment.

-heavy duty protable propane burner

-large stockpot

-a heavy-duty thermometer

-a tool that will allow you to safely lower the turkey into a vat of boiling oil, and remove it once the turkey is done.

Prepping The Bird

Size: Choose a turkey between 10-15 pounds. If you have a lot of people to feed, prepare two turkeys rather than a single huge one. If you make more than one be sure to prepare them seperatly. The turkey should either be fresh or completely thawed before cooking.

Oil: To determine the amount of oil you will need, place the bird in the pot you intend to use for frying. Pour in cold water until the turkey is covered by a couple of inches. There should still be several inches between the surface of the water and the top of the pot. Measure the water: this is how much oil you'll need. NOTE: before placing the turkey in hot oil, be sure it is patted dry with paper towels to cut down on splattering.

Seasoning: Cajun-style turkeys are traditionally injected with a liquid seasoning blend, then rubbed with a dry seasoning blend.

To properly season your turkey, place it in a pan and load your marinade into a hypodermic meat injector.

-inject the marinade into the meat in several places on the turkey by carefully lifting up the skin, rather than poking the needle through the skin.

-Gently loosen the membrane under the turkey skin. Apply a dry rub under the skin of the bird and all around the cavity.

-this can be done as much as 36 hours advance, but you should allow at least 12 hours to give the flavors time to penetrate the meat while it's kept in the refrigerator.

Cooking: Heat your oil to 375. The turkey takes approximately 3-4 minutes a pound. Slowly drop the turkey into the oil and when the turkey is done slowly pull out the turkey.

It is second only to lung cancer as a cause for cancer death in women. Each year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more 1,700 men will also be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year!

Love Bug Season!

It is that timme of year again when the love bugs are EVERYWHERE! Love Bugs appear in Florida every year in April-may and August-September. As every one knows love bugs appear on your cars and seem to be very hard to remove! Here are some helpful tips:
1. Park Your Car in the shade or garage.
2. Try to drive more at night versus during the day when they are at their worst.
3. Travel at lower speeds to reduce the number of bugs splattered on your car.
4. Place a screen on the front grill of your car to protect the finish on your car and the radiator from being clogged.
5. Wash splattered bugs off as soon as possible.
6. Wax your vehicle often during love bug season to prevent them from sticking.
7. Use a wet dryer sheet to remove stubborn love bugs without scratching your car!

During the arrival of another Marine's casket last year at Denver International Airport , Major Steve Beck described the scene as so powerful: 'See the people in the windows? They sat right there in the plane, watching those Marines. You gotta wonder what's going through their minds, knowing that they're on the plane that brought him home,' he said 'They will remember being on that plane for the rest of their lives. They're going to remember bringing that Marine home. And they should.'

By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of blue much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in BLUE and it will let our troops know the once 'silent' majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on. The first thing a soldier says when asked 'What can we do to make things better for you?' is .'We need your support and your prayers.' We might be seeing some sever weather this week due to hurricane Irene. She is scheduled to hit south Floriday by Thursday. The charter schools here in the Villages on Hwy 466 is the closest shelter in the event that you loose power or have flooding issues. Drip pan issue

Hello to all Courtney Villages resident!!

We want to let you know of a situation regarding our stove tops. We require that you do not wrap your drip pans in aluminum foil. This has been found to blow out the fuse in the stove top so that the burner you are trying to turn on will no longer work. We wanted to make you aware as we will begin charging residents who continue to wrap their drip pans for the blown out fuses that may happen as a result.

Please don't wrap your drip pans and take the aluminum foil off if you have them wrapped now.

Renters Insurance!

Recently within our apartment portfolio we have experienced two stove grease fires that occured when a resident was cooking. In both incidents neither renter had "RENTERS INSURANCE". In one situation the fire itself caused minor damage, however, the water sprinkler system and Fire Department caused severe damage to the resident's apartment as well as the neighbors below. The cost of the repair, cleaning, and replacement of furnishings exceeded $5,000. In the other incident the staff arrived on the scene and was able to put out the fire in time to keep the sprinkler system from flooding their apartment and the apartments below! The cost for the damage to the apartment stove, cabinets and cleaning up of smoke damage still exceeded $5,000.

In the past two months we have experienced forest fires near some of our aprtment communities. Fortunately the quick action of the local fire departments kept the fire from spreading into the apartment communities. This could have been a catastrophic loss for hundreds of residents. With no renters insurance your personal belongings would not be covered by the apartment community's property insurance.

To those of you who reside in any of our coastal communities, hurricane season is beginning in June just a week away. Storm damage is probable in the wake of a hurricane. Damge to your personal items from any type of storm is not covered under the apartment community's property insurance. Many of you have seen the recent devastation in North Carolina and Georgia from tornado activity. If your building is damaged or destroyed you are not covered for your personal belongings.

What you need to know is that YOU are personally liable for damages to the apartment community as well as damage to units surrounding you even if the Fire Department creates the damage with their equiptment and water! This could be financially devastating to you and your family. Below are list of many reasons you need to be insured.

DID YOU KNOW that if lightning were to strike your apartment building causing damage to your electronics (tv, computer, etc.) you would be responsible for the replacement/repair costs of these items? The landlord's insurance is not.

DID YOU KNOW that if lightening were to strike your apartment building causing a fire you are responsible for all of the personal contents inside your apartment home? The landlords inurance will not.

DID YOU KNOW that is a neighbor leaves a candle unattended causing a fire, and/or smoke or water damages your personal belongings, Courtney Villages would not be responsible for the loss? And, if your neighbor does not have their own personal property insurance, again, you would be responsible for the replacement cost of these items.

DID YOU KNOW that if a hurricane or tropical storm causes your apartment's roof to leak or window to break causing water damage to your personal belongings, the replacement cost of your items would not be covered by the landlord's insurance?

Trash Bills!!

IMPORTANT "CHANGE IN POLICY" NOTICE AS OF JULY 1, 2011

Due to the high number of resident requests and in our efforts to "go green" as well as for your convenience, EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2011, you will no longer be recieving monthly bills for trash services. Instead, you now simply include the fee along with your rent payment to Courtney Villages just as you do with the cable fee. You may pay all funds in a single check, money order, or through RentPayment.com as you normally do. We are hoping that this will simplify things for our residents and ensure that all trash payments stay current.

The trash will be $11 starting JULY 1, 2011. Please add this to the current amounts you pay for rents and cable and that amount will be the new total you should pay each month (until lease renewal). Please Note: The total trash fee amount has been reduced by .15 cents. If you need assistance in caculating what you should pay on July 1st, please contact us for assistance.

Residents who pay rent without the additional trash amount ($11.00) starting JULY 1, 2011 will have their payments returned to them. Partial payments cannot be accepted per the lease agreement and late fees will be accessed if not paid in a timely manner. Please Remember that your monthly payments is always due on the first and considered late after the third of the month.

Finally, please understand that any resident, having a past due trash bill that has not made the account current through Courtney Villages or AUM, will not be offered to renew their lease upon experation or may be forced into eviction if not paid in full. Please keep this in mind when considering your future housing needs.

If you see an animal left in a car, have someone immediatly enter the business where the owner may be, and have the owner paged until someone comes forward. Will You give this to my Daddy?

As a Company, Southwest Airlines is going to support 'Red Fridays.'
Last week I was in Atlanta , Georgia attending a conference. While I was in the airport, returning home, I heard several people behind me beginning to clap and cheer. I immediately turned around and witnessed One of the greatest acts of patriotism I have ever seen.
Moving thru the terminal was a group of soldiers in their camos. As t.........hey began heading to their gate, everyone (well almost everyone) was abruptly to their feet with their hands waving and cheering.
When I saw the soldiers, probably 30-40 of them, being applauded and Cheered for, it hit me. I'm not alone. I'm not the only red-blooded American who still loves this country and supports our troops and their families.

Of course I immediately stopped and began clapping for these young unsung heroes who are putting their lives on the line everyday for us so we can go to school, work and home without fear or reprisal.

Just when I thought I could not be more proud of my country or of our Service men and women, a young girl, not more than 6 or 7 years old ran up to one of the male soldiers. He kneeled down and said 'hi...'

The little girl then asked him if he would give something to her daddy for her...

The young soldier, who didn't look any older than maybe 22 himself, said he would try and what did she want to give to her daddy. Then suddenly the little girl grabbed the neck of this soldier, gave him the biggest hug she could muster and then kissed him on the cheek.

The mother of the little girl, who said her daughter's name was Courtney, told the young soldier that her husband was a Marine and had been in Iraq for 11 months now. As the mom was explaining how much her daughter Courtney missed her father, the young soldier began to tear up.

When this temporarily single mom was done explaining her situation, all of the soldiers huddled together for a brief second... Then one of the other servicemen pulled out a military-looking walkie-talkie. They started playing with the device and talking back and forth on it..

After about 10-15 seconds of this, the young soldier walked back over to Courtney, bent down and said this to her, 'I spoke to your daddy and he told me to give this to you.' He then hugged this little girl that he had just met and gave her a kiss on the cheek. He finished by saying 'your daddy told me to tell you that he loves you more than anything and he is coming home very soon.'

The mom at this point was crying almost uncontrollably and as the young soldier stood to his feet, he saluted Courtney and her mom. I was standing no more than 6 feet away from this entire event.

As the soldiers began to leave, heading towards their gate, people resumed their applause. As I stood there applauding and looked around, there were very few dry eyes, including my own. That young soldier in one last act of selflessness turned around and blew a kiss to Courtney with a tear rolling down his cheek.

We need to remember everyday all of our soldiers and their families and thank God for them and their sacrifices. At the end of the day, it's good to be an American.

RED FRIDAYS ----- Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the 'silent majority'. We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers.

Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday - and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that.. Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar will wear something red.

By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers.

If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family. It will not be long before the USA is covered in RED.

Heat Saftey!

It is that time of year again where the temperatures are going to rise to degrees that are warmer than our bodies can handle. Heat Related deaths and illness are preventableyet annually many people succumb to extreme heat. Historically, from 1979-2003, excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths in the US. During this period, more people in the US died from extreme heat than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. It is very important to know Heat Saftey Tips!

Drink plenty of Fluids-increase fluid intake regardless of your activity level. During exercise in heat, drink 2-4 glasses of cool fluids an hour.

Replace Salt & Minerals- Heavy sweating removes salts and minerals from the body. A Sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose from sweating.

Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen- Choose lightweight, light colored, loose fitting clothing. Not only does sunburn damage your skin but your body looses its ability to cool itself. Always wear sunscreen atleast SPF 15 or higher and apply 30 min before sun exposure.

Schedule Outdoor Activities Carefully- Try to limit your outdoor activities to morning and evening times. If you do go out in extreme heat use common sense and try to rest in shady areas.

Recognizing Heat Stroke:

-extremely high body temps (above 103f)

-red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating)

-rapid, strong pulse

-throbbing heachache

-dizziness

-nausea

-confusion

-unconsciousness

If someone you knows has any of the above symptoms than it is imortant to get them into a cool place and to not give them any fluids. Just call a medical proffessional or 911.

Recognizing Heat Exhaustion:

-heavy sweating

-paleness

-muscle cramps

-tiredness

-weakness

-dizziness

-headache

-nausea/vomiting

-fainting

if someone you or someone you know has any of the above symptoms it is important to get a cool beverage, rest, take a cool shower, get into and air conditioned environment, and be in light wieght clothing!

With Spring Break Just around the corner it is time to plan what and where you will be going. Whether you are having a family spring break or are wanting to go party or relax there are several places in Florida that you can go and have a good time!

1. Disney: This is the #1 destination for "Family Spring Break". Disney is offering Fl residents their "Wild 4 Disney Pass" for $119/person. It allows you to go to all four parks in four days!! Take into consideration when planning a trip that it is the #1 destination and is going to be really busy! If you do not want to go to the park itself, you can go to one of Disney's hotels or resort to get the Disney experience as well!

2. Beaches: There are several beaches all over Fl. One of the most popular is Daytona Beach. Take into consideration if you are trying to have a family spring break that it is going to be a teen scene and partying no matter what beach you go to. If you are wanting something a little calmer than try "private" beaches such as: Sandestin Resort which is located in NW Florida and has 2400 acres of beach or Amelia Island Plantation which is 1350 acres of beach.

3. Orlando Resorts: NickHotel is a Nickelodeon Family Suite with two water parks, Nickelodeon theming and characters, and pool games and enterainment designed by "Nick". Ritz Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes: Luxury property shares 500 acres with the J.W. Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes, On-site activites at Grande Lakes include golf, biking trail, fly-fishing, kayaking. Grill Timers!

For the saftey of Courntey Villages residents, we have placed timers on the gas grills. In order to use the gas grills you will need to turn the burners to 1 to start the timer. You will be unable to use the grills if the timer is not set. This will give you 45 minutes to use the gas. If you have any questions please call the office at 352-391-9861.

Reminder about your Trash Bill with AUM!

We would just like to remind all residents that you are responsible for all your utilities! As per lease agreement, residents are responsible for paying water, electric, and TRASH (AUM). Your trash bill will come in the mail, just like other utiliites, with an AUM logo on it. Please do not throw this away! Going Green!

It is time for all of us to do something to save what little is left of the planet's resources, to try and give back to the Earth all that it has given us. In Courtney Villages efforts of GOING GREEN, one way that we will do so is by cutting down the over use of paper in the office. We will also only provide residents with five sheets of paper per day and per person. If more paper is needed than there will be a 5cents charge per page. Doing these small things won't save the Earth, but if enough people around the world join these efforts, we can have a positive impact on our environment and give future generations a more stable platform from which to solve future problems.
There are easy steps anyone can take to start GOING GREEN! Recycling is one way to help, by placing plastic, metal, glass, and organic waste seperated into different garbage bin. Using the minimal amount of water necessary to shower, brush your teeth, and shave, avoiding the use of aerosol sprays, walking more and driving less, are all ways to GO GREEN!!!! Going Green is not just a choice anymore, it is a responsability! That is why it is so important to try and do the small things that can help change the outlook of the planet!!!

Every February, loved ones exchange flowers, candy and cards, but for troops serving overseas who are seperated from the ones they love, Valentines Day can be hard. Hugs for Soldiers would like to connect hearts at home with hearts overseas by sending "HUGS" through Valentines cards to our deployed service members to let them know how much they are appreciated.

*Cards can be purchased or hand made that will fit into an 8"x10" envelope. Please leave envelopes unsealed for security purposes.

*Please do not use glitter on valentines

*Military personnel love to communicate with us! You can include your name, email or postal address if you wish.

*Photos of the sender, senders family, church, or classroom participants can add a personal touch to your card.

*Keep your message positive! Each card is checked before it is shipped overseas!

Valentines Steak Dinner!

We would like to appologize that our tanning bed is currently out of order. Please make sure that if you are someone that uses the tanning bed, use it with respect! We would also like to remind everyone that the tanning beds are operated by the staff. When you would like to use the tanning bed please inform someone in the office so that you can sign in and we can set it for you! Also the tanning beds are only for residents that are over the age of 18 and guests are not permitted to use it. Thank You and we will inform you when the Tanning Bed is back in business!!!
